Primary Students Make Dramatic History at YohFest

Halls Head Primary School made history on Tuesday September 5th, being the first ever Primary School to take part in the prestigious Act-Belong-Commit YohFest Peel region drama competition.

The State-wide YohFest drama festival promotes health education through The Arts, encouraging youth to educate their peers and the community through drama, dance and visual art.

Celebrating it’s 20th birthday, YohFest had only been open to High Schools in metropolitan areas. 2017 is the first year Primary Schools were able to take part.

Halls Head Primary School’s Performing Arts teacher, Sian Dhu, said it was an honour to mark this 20-year-milestone by being the first Primary School to compete in the Peel region.

“YohFest was a much-loved part of my health and drama education when I was at High School, so being able to pass on the same memorable experience to my students is a dream come true” Miss Dhu said.  “Taking the title of the first ever Primary School to compete in the Peel region is just the icing on the cake”.

Halls Head Primary took a cast of 50 children aged between 8 and 12 years old. They rehearsed after school twice a week for two months.

“The dedication and teamwork shown by the young cast members is inspiring.” Miss Dhu said.
